Willis MINI of Des Moines provided the club use of its service area for registration, the driver’s meeting, and staging participants for departure. +HUH SDUWLFLSDQWV UHFHLYH ÀQDO LQVWUXFWLRQV RQ WKH HYHQW owners to justify the founding of a club, so Randy and Deb Anderson, Janis Fox, Lyle Kreps, Jake Meyer, Bill Sansenbach, and Roger Sitterly joined forces to form the Central Iowa MINI Club. Willis MINI of Des Moines, the new dealer, encouraged this effort, and offered its facilities for the Club’s use. On Saturday, April 2, 2011, the Club held its first-ever event, a “shortest- distance” rallye, with the start and finish at MINI of Des Moines. Twenty-two cars joined the fun, with drivers from both the central and eastern parts of the state. Odometer readings, taken at the start and finish, showed one car with more than 100,000 miles and one with less than 1,000 miles. Drivers (and navigators) were given a list of nine locations in the greater ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Des Moines area. They had to find each location, answer a very specific question about what was at that location to prove they had found it, and re- turn to the start with the goal of completing the task in the shortest distance. Among the challenges faced by participants were: • Find the wall mural in the historic Highland Park district and count the number of patrons riding in bumper cars; • Find the jet fighter plane overlooking Camp Dodge and determine the brand of paint been used to repaint the plane; • Find a specific commemorative parking sign at Blank Park Zoo and identify the animal depicted on the sign; and, • Find a specific outdoor sculpture at the Botanical Center and deter- mine the material from which it was constructed. First place (taken by Jon Wise and Sage Evans, with all questions answered correctly and 47 miles driven) was for a complete automotive de- tailing at Willis MINI of Des Moines and was worth more than $200. Second place (taken by Teresa Kruse and navigator/son Harrison, with all questions answered correctly and 49 miles driven) was a $50.00 gift certificate valid ith the opening of MINI of Des Moines in late December 2010, Iowa finally got its first MINI dealer and by mid-January 2011, seven like-minded residents of the Des Moines area began meet- ing to do the ground-work necessary for having a club. This group of hardy enthusiasts believed that with the opening of an Iowa MINI dealer, sales of MINIs in the state would more than generate enough - - - - - - - - - WMW - - M - - D M - D - - - M - W
